When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Lifestyle Maternity Session?
Pregnancy is such a beautiful, fleeting season of life. Your body is changing, your family is growing, and there is so much anticipation surrounding the arrival of your little one. A lifestyle maternity session is a wonderful way to slow down and document this chapter—not just the way your belly looks, but the connection, excitement, and love that already exists between you and your growing family.
One of the most common questions I get from expecting parents is: When is the best time to schedule a maternity session?
The short answer is that the ideal time is typically between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, but there is a little more to consider when choosing the right date for you.
When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Session?
For most expecting mothers, somewhere around 30–32 weeks is a beautiful sweet spot. By this point, your baby bump is usually nicely defined, making it easy to capture the beautiful shape of your pregnancy. At the same time, you may still feel relatively comfortable moving around, walking, and enjoying your session.
That said, every pregnancy is different.
Some moms may want to schedule closer to 28 weeks, especially if they are expecting twins or anticipate becoming uncomfortable earlier in pregnancy. Others may feel wonderful well into their 34th or even 35th week and prefer to wait a little longer.
Your comfort is always more important than following a specific number on the calendar.
If you're hoping for a particular season, location, or type of light, it's also important to plan ahead. Maternity sessions can fill up quickly, especially during popular times of year. I recommend reaching out during your second trimester so we have plenty of time to find a date that works beautifully for your pregnancy and your vision.
Why Is Timing So Important?
A lifestyle maternity session is meant to feel relaxed, natural, and authentic. Rather than simply posing for a series of traditional maternity portraits, we'll focus on the little moments—the way your partner looks at you, holding hands while walking together, snuggling your children, laughing, or simply taking in this special season as a family.
Choosing a time when you still feel comfortable is a big part of creating those genuine moments.
We also want to think about the setting and the light. If we're planning an outdoor session, the time of day can completely change the mood of your images. Soft morning or evening light can create a warm, dreamy feeling, while an overcast day can give us beautiful, soft, even light.
This is why choosing your session date isn't only about how many weeks pregnant you'll be. It's also about the overall experience and feeling you want your images to have.
How Do You Choose the Perfect Location?
One of my favorite parts of planning a lifestyle maternity session is choosing a location that feels like you.
You don't have to choose a location simply because it looks beautiful in someone else's photographs. The best backdrop is one that fits your personality, your family's style, and the mood you want to remember from this season of life.
Maybe you picture yourself walking barefoot along the beach with your partner and children. Or perhaps you're drawn to a quiet wooded setting with tall trees, soft light, and an intimate feeling.
You might love the simplicity of a wide-open grassy field, wildflowers moving in the breeze, and a beautiful sunset in the background. Maybe you prefer something closer to home, where your family can relax and interact naturally without feeling like you're "at a photo shoot."
There really isn't one right answer.
Beach, Woods, Fields, or Somewhere Else?
Think about the vibe you want your photographs to have.
Beach
A beach location can create a peaceful, airy, and romantic feel. The open horizon, water, sand, and movement of the breeze can give your images a relaxed and timeless quality. A beach session can be especially beautiful at sunset when the light becomes warm and soft.
Woods
If you love a cozy, intimate, and earthy aesthetic, a wooded location may be perfect. Trees can create beautiful layers and depth in photographs while giving the session a quiet, connected feeling. Walking through the woods, sitting together, or simply interacting as a family can feel incredibly natural in this type of setting.
Grassy Fields
Open fields are wonderful for families who love a more organic, romantic, or whimsical look. Tall grasses, wildflowers, and wide-open skies create plenty of space for movement and candid moments. Fields are also beautiful during golden hour when the sunlight filters through the grass.
Your Own Home (my personal favorite)
Don't overlook your home as a possibility.
Lifestyle photography is all about documenting real connection, and sometimes the most meaningful place to do that is where your family already feels comfortable. Your home can provide a cozy backdrop for photographs of your family preparing for baby, relaxing together, reading in the nursery, cuddling on the couch, or simply enjoying an ordinary morning together.
Those everyday moments often become the photographs you treasure most.
How I Can Help You Choose
If you're not sure which type of location fits your vision, you don't have to figure it out on your own.
Part of my job is helping you plan your session from beginning to end, including offering location suggestions based on the vibes you're interested in.
You might tell me, "I want something romantic and dreamy," "I love earthy and natural," "I want something playful with my kids," or "I want a quiet, intimate session."
From there, I can help narrow down location options that complement that vision.
We can consider the scenery, season, light, accessibility, and how the location will work for your family. My goal isn't simply to find a pretty place to take pictures. It's to find a setting that helps you feel comfortable and allows your family to interact naturally.
What Should You Wear for a Lifestyle Maternity Session?
Once we've chosen your location, we can also think about wardrobe.
Your clothing should complement the setting without distracting from the connection and emotion in your photographs. Soft, neutral colors often work beautifully in natural environments, but that doesn't mean you have to wear beige or white.
Flowing dresses, textured fabrics, earthy tones, soft pastels, and timeless neutrals can all photograph beautifully. If you're including your partner or children, coordinating colors rather than matching outfits can help everything feel cohesive while still allowing everyone's personality to show.
And remember: comfort matters.
You want to be able to move, sit, walk, hug, and interact with your family without constantly adjusting your clothing.
But don’t worry, upon booking, I will provide you with my Welcome Guide that goes into detail about what to wear.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
Because pregnancy can be unpredictable, I always encourage expecting parents to plan their maternity session sooner rather than later.
Ideally, we can start talking about your session during your second trimester, giving us plenty of time to choose your date, location, wardrobe, and overall vision. This is especially helpful if you have your heart set on a particular season or outdoor location.
The goal is for your session to feel exciting—not stressful.
By planning ahead, we can create a relaxed experience where you don't have to worry about all the little details.
Your Maternity Session Should Feel Like You
There is no single formula for the perfect maternity session.
For one family, that might mean walking barefoot along the beach. For another, it might mean exploring a wooded trail together. For someone else, it could be running through a grassy field with their little ones or snuggling together at home.
The most important thing is that your photographs reflect your family, your connection, and this unique season of your life.
So, when is the best time to schedule your lifestyle maternity session?
For most families, 28–34 weeks is a great starting point, with around 30–32 weeks often being an ideal window. But the best time ultimately depends on how you're feeling, what you're envisioning, and the location and season you're hoping to capture.
If you're dreaming about your maternity photographs but aren't sure where to begin, that's exactly what I'm here for. I can help you choose a date and suggest locations based on the feeling and vibe you're drawn to—whether that's a dreamy beach, an earthy woodland setting, a golden grassy field, or somewhere meaningful to your family.
This season doesn't last forever. Your maternity session is an opportunity to pause, connect, and preserve the anticipation of meeting the little person who is already so deeply loved.
